”Holistic” is a word derived from the Greek word holos, meaning “whole.” Holistic health is a concept in medical practice upholding that all aspects of people’s needs, psychological, physical and social/cultural should be taken into account and seen as a whole, understanding that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. From the standpoint of Holistic health, disease is viewed to be the result of physical, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental imbalance. In alternative medicine, it is believed that the spiritual aspect should also be taken into account when assessing a person’s overall wellbeing.
The process of returning to whole health is a journey that requires all aspects of ones being to be taken into account. The primary goal is to return to and maintain a harmonious relationship within ones self and the world in which it is a part. The web of life we are all connected to is vast. Each part of the whole has an effect on all of its other parts. In reality there is no separation. The only purpose of seperation is to rejoin that Unity. As long as there is separation there will be a bridge. We are all on the path, and despite our differences, being on the path makes us much more similar than we realize.
